葉桂榮

Founder / Designer of a Graphic Advertising Design Company
Director of Hong Kong Rehabilitation Power

For more than forty years, he has been self-employed, founding and running a graphic advertising design company. From 2019 to 2022, affected by the uncertain social turmoil, he lost a large number of clients and work. Suddenly, he found himself with a great deal of idle time every day. Out of sheer boredom, he picked up his brush and began painting again. As he painted, he thought of using cun (texture strokes) to interpret the vigour of lines, dots, hooks, and rubbing in sketch drawing. Through this evolving painting process, he hopes to realise his long-held ambition of achieving a “photorealistic” black-and-white photographic effect.

Artist Statement:
Traditional Chinese ink landscape painting largely employs steps such as outlining, rubbing, dyeing, splashing, dotting, and blending to render the delicate textures of extraordinary mountains and rocks, as well as the mood and tonal contrasts of yin and yang in bird-and-flower and landscape works. In recent years, a group of art creators have used the character cun (pronounced “chun” / Seon*1) to collectively refer to these variations of brushwork and sequential strokes, and to encapsulate the technical implications of traditional Chinese ink landscape painting.
