Whispers of the Grassland Series

Artist Statement:

With grassland horses as the central motif, this series uses the language of contemporary heavy-colour Chinese painting to capture the vastness of the grassland and the gentle stillness of its living creatures within the frame. The works abandon grand narrative and focus instead on partial views and expressions of the horses: some leaning on each other in black-and-white contrast; some revealing only their eyes and brows, half-hidden between heaven and earth; some standing quietly with heads raised, gazing towards distant Mongolian yurts in the distance. Concise contour lines are paired with subdued mineral colours — a deep green grassland ground, plain white and dense black horse bodies, accented with vermilion tassels — simple, earthy, and weighty. Rather than depicting horses in fierce gallop, the works portray the quiet moments when they rest, keep each other company, and gaze into the distance.
